Water with a pH below 7 is acidic — and acidic water eats plumbing. It dissolves copper from pipe walls (those blue-green stains on tubs and fixtures are your plumbing, relocated), drives pinhole leaks, leaches metals into your drinking water, and shortens the life of water heaters and every fixture in the house. Low alkalinity usually accompanies it: with no carbonate buffering, pH swings freely and corrosion accelerates.

Central Texas cities generally run alkaline water, but Hill Country wells in granite and sand formations can run acidic — and because the damage is silent until a leak appears, pH is one of the first numbers our forensic water analysis checks on every well.

The classic fix is a calcite neutralizer — a backwashing tank of natural calcium carbonate media that dissolves just enough into the water to raise pH and alkalinity. For very low pH, high flows, or where added hardness is unwanted, a soda-ash injection system doses the correction precisely instead. What pH should my water be?

Roughly 7.0–8.5 is the comfortable zone for plumbing. Below 7, water turns increasingly corrosive — and the damage happens quietly inside your pipes long before you see a symptom.

What are the signs of acidic well water?

Blue-green stains on fixtures and tubs (dissolved copper), pinhole leaks in copper pipe, metallic taste, and premature failures of water heaters and fixtures. Low alkalinity often rides along, leaving the water with no buffering to resist pH swings.

How does a neutralizer work?
