Salt-free conditioning is ideal if you want scale protection without adding sodium to your water, without buying salt, and without producing wastewater. Active Armor removes scaling and corrosives from water and lengthens the life of appliances — a great fit for homes, commercial buildings and food-service operations.

One important distinction: salt-free systems condition water to prevent scale rather than removing hardness the way a softener does, so you won't get the slick soft-water feel or the soap savings. If you're weighing the two, our water softener vs. salt-free comparison lays it out, and a free estimate confirms the right fit for your home.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a salt-free system actually soften water?

No. Salt-free systems condition water to prevent scale and corrosion, but they don't remove hardness minerals, so the water isn't technically softened. Only a salt-based softener removes calcium and magnesium.

What are the benefits of going salt-free?

No salt to buy or haul, no electricity, and no regeneration water sent down the drain — plus scale and corrosion protection for your plumbing and appliances. It's a good fit where you can't add sodium or have no drain.

Will I still get spots and scale with a salt-free system?

Salt-free conditioning greatly reduces new scale, but because hardness minerals remain in the water you won't get the full soft-water experience (spot-free glassware, extra-soft laundry). If that matters most, a softener is the better choice.

Is salt-free good for a septic system?

Yes — because there's no salty regeneration discharge, salt-free conditioners are often preferred for homes on septic or without a nearby drain.
