Silica is dissolved silicon dioxide — rock glass, essentially — and Central Texas water carries plenty of it. It shows up as a cloudy white film on glassware, shower doors and fixtures that looks like hard-water spotting but behaves differently: vinegar dissolves calcium spots; it does nothing to silica haze. That kitchen-counter test tells you which problem you have.
Here's the honest part most websites skip: softeners don't remove silica. Neither do salt-free scale-control systems — including our own Active Armour®, whose chemistry targets carbonate and sulfate scale, not silica. Ion exchange doesn't grab it, and at high heat silica forms a glassy deposit that's genuinely difficult to remove. If someone promises whole-house silica elimination for a home, ask hard questions.
What actually works is targeting the water that matters: reverse osmosis removes silica from drinking water and final-rinse water (the spot-free trick used on cars and glassware), and deionization polishing serves where absolute spot-free results are required. For whole-home comfort, the play is softening the hardness that is treatable so combined spotting drops, and putting RO where the spots hurt most. In commercial steam and boiler systems, silica limits are a chemistry-and-blowdown design question — one our commercial team handles with eyes open.

For whole-home silica at residential scale there is no silver bullet — honest expectation-setting beats a system that can't deliver.
