Salt-Free Systems
Stop scale and corrosion up to a 48″ pipe with Crusader Commercial Liquid Active Armor — salt-free, electronically dosed, NSF/ANSI/CAN 60-certified protection for boilers, cooling towers, apartments, restaurants and facilities across Central Texas.

Scale and corrosion quietly drain commercial budgets — clogged pipes, scaled boilers and water heaters, failing kitchen and laundry equipment, and climbing energy bills. Crusader Commercial Liquid Active Armor (LAA) stops it at the source: salt-free, electronically dosed, NSF/ANSI/CAN 60-certified protection sized to your facility.
Scale and corrosion control up to a 48″ pipe. LAA is engineered for serious commercial flow — it protects piping, boilers, cooling systems and equipment on lines all the way up to 48 inches, a scale at which a water softener simply isn’t the right tool. Central Texas commercial water is high in hardness and sulfate, and the worst offender is calcium sulfate (gypsum) scale — hard, dense, acid-resistant, and it grips plastic and metal alike. For most commercial and multi-unit properties the issue isn’t soft water for showers — it’s keeping that scale and corrosion out of the infrastructure, and that’s exactly what LAA is built to do, without salt, wastewater, or the maintenance burden of a large softening train. It’s one of the few solutions purpose-built for scale and corrosion control at this scale. More on calcium sulfate scale.
Crusader offers two kinds of Active Armor salt-free conditioning: Traditional Active Armor and Liquid Active Armor (LAA). Our commercial systems use Liquid Active Armor — engineered for the higher flow rates and demands of businesses, facilities and multi-unit properties.
Commercial LAA protects business-scale plumbing, boilers and equipment from scale and corrosion, reducing downtime and maintenance costs without adding salt or producing wastewater.
While it isn't a water-softening technology, Active Armor is recommended anywhere calcium-carbonate scale or corrosive water threatens equipment:
We most often install Liquid Active Armor for commercial and multi-unit properties, but we also use it on cooling towers and even some homes where it's the right fit. We'll confirm the right Active Armor system on a free estimate.

A softener removes hardness for soft showers and spot-free glassware — a residential priority. A commercial building needs its pipes and equipment protected, and at commercial flow a softening train means salt, brine discharge, large vessels and heavy maintenance. LAA takes the smarter path: it keeps scale-forming minerals (including stubborn calcium sulfate) in solution so they never deposit — no salt, no wastewater, far less upkeep.
| For a commercial building | Liquid Active Armor | Large water softener |
|---|---|---|
| Primary job | Scale & corrosion control | Hardness removal |
| Pipe size | Up to 48″ | Practical limits / multi-tank trains |
| Calcium sulfate (gypsum) | Kept in solution | Sulfate not removed |
| Salt & brine discharge | None | Yes |
| Corrosion protection | Yes (phosphate film) | No |
| Maintenance | Monitor & refill | Salt, cleaning, regeneration |
For most commercial properties LAA is the right tool; where true softening is also needed we design the combination. See our commercial overview.
Inhibits Calcium & Magnesium Carbonate Scale Formation
Helps protect your facility's pipes & plumbing from corrosion & accumulation of hard water scale
Scale reduction & corrosion control at a lower operating cost than alternative technologies
Bonds with inorganic metals & forms a protective nanolayer
Protect your business's water-bearing appliances like ice makers, drink machines, and coffee makers from costly scale & corrosion
Keeps heat-transfer surfaces clean in boilers, water heaters and cooling systems — less fuel, fewer hot spots, lower carbon footprint
Reduces existing scale formation without using acid or dangerous chemicals

Crusader Active Armour is not a water softening technology. It acts as a "Boundary-Zone Inhibitor", preventing hardness compounds from sticking to themselves or anything else to form scale. The advanced proprietary formulation of Active Armour allows it to function uniformly from 40°F to 140°F instead of breaking down like so many other phosphate compounds. In addition to effectively controlling scale, the safe chemistry of Active Armour bonds to exposed metal components of plumbing, faucets, water heaters, and other appliances, and protects them from corrosion.
Crusader offers two different kinds of Active Armour: Traditional Active Armour and Liquid Active Armour (LAA). Traditional Active Armour uses flow-through technology — no electricity required and no control valve needed — with cartridges that are simple in design and easy to replace. Liquid Active Armour is electronically controlled: water usage is monitored electronically and dosed accordingly to ensure maximum efficiency and protection, and it is easy to monitor and refill as needed.
Liquid Active Armor can protect a boiler and recirculation system (hot water only) or an entire facility (hot and cold). It keeps scale-forming minerals in solution so they never deposit on heat-transfer surfaces, which maintains efficiency, reduces reheating costs, restores flow in recirculation loops, and extends equipment life.
In boilers, water heaters and heat exchangers, scale forms when impurities precipitate directly onto hot heat-transfer surfaces (or settle out and bake on). Because scale insulates, even a thin layer forces equipment to burn more fuel, creates hot spots, and can eventually overheat and rupture a tube. The less heat a deposit conducts, the more dangerous it is:
| Material on the heat-transfer surface | Thermal conductivity (kcal/m²·h·°C) |
|---|---|
| Clean steel | 15 |
| Calcium sulfate (CaSO₄) | 1–2 |
| Calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) | 0.5–1 |
| Silica (SiO₂) | 0.2–0.5 |
Even a thin scale layer conducts a tiny fraction of the heat that clean steel does — which is why it wastes so much energy.
Common feed-water contaminants that form boiler deposits include calcium, magnesium, iron, aluminum and silica, and the deposits behave differently:
Liquid Active Armor prevents and descales every one of these forms of scale — including calcium sulfate — keeping heat-transfer surfaces clean so equipment runs efficiently, uses less energy, lowers your carbon footprint, and lasts longer.
Water usage is monitored electronically and dosed accordingly for maximum efficiency and protection. Liquid Active Armor injection systems include:
The result is scale reduction and corrosion control at a lower operating cost than many alternative technologies — easy to monitor and refill, so your facility stays protected. Programs are available to descale existing plumbing where needed, on boiler/recirculation (hot-water) systems or entire-facility (hot and cold) systems.
Beyond scale and corrosion control, facilities using Active Armour phosphate treatment commonly see secondary benefits such as: reduced chlorine demand, lower color and turbidity, less staining, removal of existing system scale deposits, control of biofilm regrowth, better valve operation, improved meter accuracy, fewer complaint calls, and reduced maintenance and service costs.
