Ask around and someone will tell you a water softener will “rot your pipes.” It’s one of the most persistent myths in plumbing — and the industry’s own corrosion science says otherwise.
Where the myth comes from
Parts of the country — New England, the Pacific Northwest, sections of the Southeast — have naturally soft water that genuinely is corrosive. But it’s corrosive because it’s acidic and low in minerals, not because it lacks hardness. People saw “soft” and “corrosive” together in nature and assumed one caused the other.
What softening actually changes
An ion-exchange softener swaps calcium and magnesium for sodium. Per the Water Quality Association’s corrosion education materials, that exchange does not change any of the factors that drive corrosion: the water’s pH stays the same, its carbon dioxide content stays the same, its dissolved oxygen stays the same, and its overall mineral concentration — the conductivity that feeds galvanic corrosion — stays essentially the same. Softened city water is not naturally soft acid water; chemically, they have almost nothing in common.
“But doesn’t scale protect my pipes?”
The other half of the myth is the idea that hard-water scale is a protective liner you shouldn’t remove. The WQA’s material is blunt about this: scale forms unevenly — heaviest at heat transfer points, thin or absent elsewhere — and corrosion happens right through and underneath it. Thousands of water heaters in hard-water areas fail from corrosion every year, scale and all. A coating you can’t control isn’t protection; it’s just insulation on your heating elements and a flow restriction in your pipes.
What real protection looks like
If corrosion is a concern — pinhole leaks, blue-green staining, aggressive well water — the recognized fix isn’t keeping your scale.
