How Often Should a Water Softener Be Serviced?

A water softener is one of the lowest-maintenance appliances in your home, but a little attention keeps it efficient and extends its life — which matters even more with the very hard water across much of Central Texas.

What needs attention, and how often

• Salt — every few weeks to monthly: Keep the brine tank at least one-third full and check for “salt bridges” (a hard crust that keeps salt from dissolving).
• Settings & salt level check — monthly: A quick look confirms it's regenerating and using salt as expected.

Signs your softener needs service

Return of hard-water symptoms (spotting, scale, less lather), running out of soft water, using salt much faster or slower than usual, or the system not advancing through its cycles. Any of these is worth a service visit.
