How Often Should a Water Softener Be Serviced?

June 2026

A water softener is one of the lowest-maintenance appliances in your home, but a little attention keeps it efficient and extends its life — which matters even more with the very hard water across much of Central Texas.

What needs attention, and how often

  • Salt — every few weeks to monthly: Keep the brine tank at least one-third full and check for “salt bridges” (a hard crust that keeps salt from dissolving).
  • Settings & salt level check — monthly: A quick look confirms it's regenerating and using salt as expected.
  • Resin-bed cleaning — periodically: Hard water, iron and chlorine slowly foul the resin; a cleaner restores capacity. Our ProGuard program is designed to keep the system at peak performance.
  • Professional check-up — yearly: We review the valve, settings, salt dosing and resin condition, and catch small issues before they become failures.

Signs your softener needs service

Return of hard-water symptoms (spotting, scale, less lather), running out of soft water, using salt much faster or slower than usual, or the system not advancing through its cycles. Any of these is worth a service visit.

On very hard water, a Twin Alternating Platform and an efficient maintenance routine make a real difference. If it's been a while, schedule a check-up.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should a water softener be serviced?

A yearly check-up is a good rule of thumb in Central Texas — more often with very hard water. Salt is topped up as needed; resin, the valve and settings are reviewed annually.

How long does a water softener last?

With proper sizing and maintenance, quality softeners commonly last 10–15+ years. Very hard water and neglected maintenance shorten that; programs like ProGuard help protect the investment.
