Heavy metals reach your tap by two roads. Geology puts arsenic, uranium, iron and manganese into groundwater — a well-country issue. Plumbing puts lead and copper into water after the meter, as corrosive water dissolves solder, brass, fixtures and service lines — which is why a clean utility report doesn't guarantee a clean tap.

Each metal has its own removal chemistry: certified reverse osmosis is the workhorse barrier for the drinking-water line (lead & copper, arsenic, uranium); anion exchange handles uranium and some arsenic species whole-house; oxidation-plus-filtration is the answer for iron and manganese; and for plumbing-derived lead and copper, corrosion control stops the dissolving at the source — the same approach cities use, at house scale.

The design question is always the same pair: which metal, and which road did it take? A forensic water analysis answers both — then the treatment train follows the chemistry.

Which heavy metals show up in Central Texas water?

Lead and copper mostly come from plumbing — solder, fixtures, service lines — while arsenic, uranium, iron and manganese come from geology, mainly in wells. City water is treated at the plant, but plumbing metals are picked up after the meter, at your house.

What actually removes heavy metals?

It's metal-specific: certified reverse osmosis for the drinking-water line; anion exchange for uranium and some arsenic species; oxidation plus filtration for iron and manganese; and corrosion control to keep lead and copper from dissolving out of your own pipes in the first place.

Do I need whole-house treatment or just the kitchen tap?

Depends on the metal and the source. Plumbing-derived lead and copper argue for corrosion control plus point-of-use RO; geological metals in a well usually call for whole-house removal.
